Expunging Records

If you have permission in Data Archive, you can expunge a record/collection and a record type/sub-section. For example, a record or collection could be a case, arrest, citation, etc. A record type or a sub-sections could be a subject, arestee, persons, etc.

An expungement is when personally identifiable information about an individual's involvement in the criminal justice system is removed from state databases and destroyed or when records of the individual's involvement are sealed so they become unavailable to anyone other than law enforcement officials.

When a record is expunged, the information about an individual's involvement with the criminal justice system may be destroyed in some states. This means that the record is not deleted, but all personally identifiable information is removed from the record.

In other states, the record is sealed, but the information is not actually destroyed. The information is removed from public view and does not appear in background checks. However, it is still be available to law enforcement officials. See Sealing Records for more information.
